A few more details: In 1989, after the Mexican government abandoned the coffee sector because of budget cuts, the Oaxacan State Coffee Producers Network (CEPCO) was established. Since 1993, they have promoted the production, processing, and marketing of organic and sustainable coffee, which is ecologically friendly, shade grown, and bird friendly. This coop united small-scale coffee producers throughout Oaxaca. CEPCO's objective was to confront the coffee crisis that threatened farmers and their families, as well as some communities. CEPCO uses revenue from their Fair Trade sales to: provide credit and savings support for members, to create a crop diversification program, to promote women's organization and technical assistance to families, to provide life insurance for members, and to fund infrastructure improvements. Currently, the coop is composed of 34 regional and community organizations, the largest network of small coffee farmers in Mexico. 90% of CEPCO's farmers own less than 2 hectares.
